What does the popular sandbox game Minecraft and papercrafting have in common? They both allow you to unleash your creativity to its full extent!

If you’re an avid Minecraft fan and just can’t get enough of building expansive landscapes, it may be time to express your passion with real-life papercraft projects.

And the best thing is that these two hobbies meld so well together! With the angular shape of paper matching Minecraft’s cubes, paper crafting is uniquely suitable for recreating your favorite Minecraft items and characters in the real world.

Hopefully, you’ll be able to find some inspiration for your next project!

What Is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a video game developed by Mojang Studios that was first released in 2009.  In the game, players can do virtually whatever they want in an ever-expanding world of blocks representing various materials.

Blocks are broken down, crafted, and then turned into various items, tools, and structures. You “mine” materials, and then you “craft” with them; it’s all in the name!

With its unlimited potential for creation, the game has remained highly popular over the years.

There are various modes such as Survival, where you can challenge yourself, or a Creative mode that lets you fully express your imagination. This amount of freedom is why the game is called a “sandbox”!

Papercrafts and Minecraft: Why They Go Together

At first, physical paper crafting may not seem similar to a video game in any way. But if you take a closer look, you’d be surprised at how much papercrafts and Minecraft really have in common!

1. Creativity and Building Possibilities

Minecraft is famous for the potential it offers with its building system. Its immense possibility and the creativity it fosters means it’s even used in educational settings.

This translates extremely well to traditional crafts, and especially papercraft!

Papercraft is also an activity that provides endless possibilities, considering the flexibility of paper. Just like Minecraft, you can use papercraft to build almost anything you want.

2. DIY Crafting and Customization Options

One of the main gameplay aspects of Minecraft is crafting. This feature lets you take raw materials from the world and transform them into various items.

However, the items tend to be pretty basic, including things such as wooden blocks or simple tools. To really extend your creativity in the game, there’s a big element of DIY and customization.

You have to craft the right things and put them together yourself to shape the world in the way you want!

This is strikingly similar to real-life crafting, where you also need to apply your innate imagination and creativity to simple building blocks. Papercraft also provides plenty of avenues for customization through a DIY experience.

3. Fun and Engaging Activity for Minecraft Enthusiasts

The gradual satisfaction of making something out of papercraft creates a highly engaging and fun activity. For Minecraft fans, it’s even more exciting to see things from the game come to life with paper!

The similarities between papercraft and Minecraft help to make the activity feel like second nature to Minecraft enthusiasts.

4. Bridge between Virtual and Physical Worlds

Paper is one of the most angular materials in our lives that can still be creatively manipulated.

This makes it a perfect medium between the blocky virtual world of Minecraft and the world we live in!

Angular objects in Minecraft’s virtual world can be recreated uniquely and accurately through paper crafting. The physical translation of the virtual world is certainly an uncommon but interesting aspect to explore!

5 Best Minecraft Papercrafts Out There

Of course, there are many more options than the five listed below. Make sure to take a look around, especially if there’s a particular Minecraft design that you’re eager to create.

Papercraft 1: Minecraft Creeper

This Minecraft creeper papercraft allows you to make a mini version of the infamous creeper mob enemy.

Its design derives from the Minecraft Dungeons spinoff’s version, so it’s a bit brighter and has fewer spots.

Papercraft 2: Minecraft Steve

Make yourself a papercraft version of Minecraft’s main character, Steve, with this bendable design. You can even move his limbs around like an action figure!

Papercraft 3: Minecraft Enderman

The mysterious enderman mob becomes a little smaller with this papercraft design. The eyes are white instead of purple because it’s again based on the design from Minecraft Dungeons.

Papercraft 4: Minecraft Diamond Sword

What’s cooler than this? Now you can have a life-sized Minecraft diamond sword of your own, in papercraft form. Don’t try cutting anything with it, though — the paper’s just decor!

Papercraft 5: Minecraft Pig

This iconic Minecraft papercraft pig can be bent to trot around the flat surfaces of your house.

Be careful — the small moving parts mean it’s a little more difficult to put together, but I’m sure you won’t shy away from any challenge!

5 Tools Needed to Build Minecraft Papercrafts

Now that you’ve gotten some inspiration, you’re probably raring to give paper crafting a try.

Before you delve into the craft, there are some tools and materials you should have on hand!

If you want to DIY your own paper crafts, you’ll need the following:

  1. Cricut device/machine. You can buy one from Cricut or one of their international providers. If you’re not yet ready to buy your own, try checking out local makerspaces or with other crafty people you know. You can also try using a regular printer, but you’ll need to cut the paper yourself on a cutting board.
  2. Cardstock paper (150 GSM or more). Cardstock is best suited for papercraft projects. Make sure to get materials with a higher GSM so they’re more durable!
  3. Scorer or bone folder. While you certainly can make your own creases, having a reliable scorer or bone folder will give you crisper edges and an overall better end product.
  4. Tacky glue. You can use any glue, but the best results come with using tacky glue. It’s a specially-made adhesive that dries quickly and leaves no trace — perfect for papercrafting. And if you want the best type of glue out there: well, you can’t go wrong with Aleene’s Tacky Glue!
  5. Actual design files that you load into the Cricut device. Minecraft designs should be readily available online.
