Dragon Mask

Bought five of these to be the dragon heads for the Tiamat for a youth production of She Kills Monsters. They worked and looked AWESOME -- we painted them in the appropriate colors, and even added UV accents so they would glow under UV stage lights. Three caveats: 1) These kits are complicated and take time, attention & detail to build. They're still a cheaper & simpler solution to building five dragon heads from scratch, but it is NOT EASY. You need to account for days of build time and need people who can put the time & work into them. Multiple coats of paint and protective spray were needed. Including painting the inside black so that no white would show onstage. 2) They are fragile (it's still paper!) and need to be protected offstage/be able to trust your actors to handle them carefully. The jaws/teeth can go wonky despite your best efforts. Lots of glue was used, but also sturdy tape, to speed up the build process and give more internal support. 3) I originally thought we could use them as masks for the actors, but with mics and wigs, it wasn't going to work. Instead we had actors hold them, by adding wooden dowel pieces as internal handles across the inside of the heads. The handles were critical for usability. Again, the heads worked for us. They looked SO COOL when done. I would use them again, especially for a budget-constrained show. If you're trying to figure out how the heck to do five dragons heads for SKM, this is a viable and not insanely expensive solution. The trade-off is that they are time-consuming to build, and you have to make sure everyone who works with them handles them carefully.

This was my first time doing a Papercraft project. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The number system worked well to match everything up. I upgraded mine by painting blue and adding foam teeth. I also painted inside the mouth to hide the numbers. If there was an improvement to make, I would suggest printing the paper teeth separately and glueing inside to hide the numbers. Tks Rich

This mask was absolutely amazing and my friends love it. I got tons of compliments wearing this at home and sharing it in social media! I'm now waiting for Halloween events!
